19 July 2006)
With funding from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the ACLS Humanities Program in Belarus,
Russia, and Ukraine continues its ambitious initiative to support humanities scholars
doing exemplary work in the former Soviet Union during a time of crisis, so as to assure
continued future leadership in the humanities.
The American Council of Learned Societies is pleased to announce a new program of grants to individuals in the
archaeology and early history of East Asia. This program is undertaken in cooperation
with the Henry Luce Foundation. Research fellowships and training grants will be awarded
for study of the peoples and cultures of early East Asia.
Organized by the ACLS with financial support from the Ford Foundation, the Social Science Translation Project (SSTP) brought
together a group of translators, editors, and social scientists to discuss problems
arising from the translation of a variety of texts that employ social-scientific concepts.
The ACLS, in collaboration with the Social Science Research Council supports various
research and planning activities to encourage research on specific countries or regions of
the world, as well as comparative and transnational research projects. The ACLS/SSRC International Program continues work
formerly carried out by the ACLS/SSRC Joint Area Studies Committees.
As part of the ACLS/SSRC International Program, the ACLS sponsors a multi-disciplinary,
cross-regional Collaborative Research
Network on "Official and Vernacular Identifications in the Making of the Modern
World." The network consists of scholars in Russia, Thailand, China, France and
the French Atlantic World, and the United States, who pursue their own research agendas
within a comparative analytical framework.
The ACLS continues its support of the Beijing office of the Committee on Scholarly Communication with China
(CSCC), which is sponsored by the ACLS, the National Academy of Sciences, and the
Social Science Research Council. Two CSCC
fellowship programs are adminstered by the ACLS.
The Center for Educational Exchange with Vietnam
(CEEVN) administers and supports educational and academic exchanges between Vietnam and
the United States. It has been affiliated with the ACLS since 1994.
With funding from the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for
Scholarly Exchange, the ACLS administers a program supporting conferences and publications
on "New Perspectives on Chinese Culture and
Society." This program will award funds in support of planning meetings,
workshops, and/or conferences leading to publication on scholarly volumes.
