The Scholarship of Teaching, by Ellen Bender and Donald Gray (Indiana U)
"With the blurring of the boundaries that we have long drawn between faculty roles in research and teaching--and a growing recognition of their common intellectual patterns of questioning, exploring, testing, and professing--a new phrase has emerged, challenging the stereotypes and calling for further amplification: 'the scholarship of teaching.'"

The Scholarship of Teaching, by Dr. Sandy Middleton
"If we are going to advance the scholarship of teaching, our collective attitudes must change and we must seriously challenge the status quo."

The Scholarship of Teaching: New Elaborations, New Developments, by Pat Hutchings and Lee Shulman

Scholarship of Teaching: A Self-Study Report from Cal-Poly
"In July, 1998, a specially appointed 'Instructional Development Study Group,' chaired by Vice President Emeritus David Walch, presented a report to the Provost describing the results of its study. The report detailed strengths and weaknesses in faculty development practices at Cal Poly, and made some pointed recommendations. The report called for establishment of a 'Culture of Innovation' at Cal Poly and argued that the current campus culture systematically (though unintentionally) inhibits innovation in teaching."

The Scholarship of Teaching: What's the Problem?, by Randy Bass (Georgetown U)
"In scholarship and research, having a 'problem' is at the heart of the investigative process; it is the compound of the generative questions around which all creative and productive activity revolves.  But in one’s teaching, a "problem" is something you don’t want to have, and if you have one, you probably want to fix it.  . . .  How might we think of teaching practice, and the evidence of student learning, as problems to be investigated, analyzed, represented, and debated?"

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: Questions & Answers from the Field
Does scholarly teaching differ from the scholarship of teaching?  Who does the scholarship of teaching?  Is this scholarship disciplinary-specific or interdisciplinary?  What role do students have in this work?  How do campuses encourage the scholarship of teaching?  (From the December 1999 AAHE Bulletin)

VISIONS OF THE POSSIBLE: MODELS FOR CAMPUS SUPPORT OF THE SCHOLARSHIP OF TEACHING AND LEARNING, by Lee Shulman
This paper draws on comments made by Dr. Shulman at meetings during November and December, 1999, bringing together research university faculty and administrators interested in the advancement of teaching and the scholarship of teaching.  The meetings were sponsored by the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL), which works with campuses of all types through the Teaching Academy Campus Program, coordinated by CASTL's partner, the American Association for Higher Education (www.aahe.org). The models presented in this paper are, as suggested by its title, possibilities--which campuses will adapt, refine, and add to based on local circumstances.
