Arthur M. Gignilliat, Jr., Professorship at AASU for
2003

The AASU Faculty Development Committee
invites applications for AASU's premier faculty development grant: the Arthur M.
Gignilliat, Jr., Professorship for the year 2003. Endowed by the Savannah Electric
& Power Company, the Professorship Fund is intended to "support Armstrong
Atlantic State University’s goal of maintaining a ‘tradition of excellence’
by providing the best educational and training experience for its students."
Under the terms of the Professorship, a full-time faculty member at AASU will be provided
with a summer stipend (up to $2,500) as well as a course release in both the spring and
fall semesters of 2002 to (a) pursue a project
that enhances teaching and learning at AASU, and (b) communicate the results of that
project to other interested faculty. The Faculty Development Committee will review
applications and make recommendations for funding to the Vice President and Dean of
Faculty, who will make the final decision on funding.
Information and Instructions
• All full-time faculty members are eligible to apply. Although a faculty
member may apply for both the Professorship and an AASU faculty grant, the
individual awarded the Professorship in 2003 will not be eligible to serve that year as
the principal investigator on either a Research & Scholarship or a Teaching &
Learning Grant.
• Projects must explicitly address issues related to teaching and learning, and
applicants must comment on how they intend to communicate the results of their project to
other interested faculty.
• Applications are to be made using the form provided by Kim McCallie, Office of Sponsored Programs (ext. 5803).
• If human subjects are used, IRB approval must be attached.
• The five guidelines
at the bottom of this page should be addressed using no more than five
additional pages (double-spaced, 12-point font). Proposals will be evaluated
according to the criteria identified in those five guidelines. Please attach a copy
of your curriculum vitae and (if necessary) IRB approval. No other attachments are
permitted.
• Awards must be spent during the 2003 calendar year.
• Given the teaching mission of AASU, faculty-student collaboration is strongly
encouraged and cross-disciplinary applications are encouraged.
• The Gignilliat Professor must deliver a final report to the Vice President and Dean
of Faculty.
• Completed applications must be received by 5:00 p.m. on Friday,
October 18, 2002. Ten copies of the completed application are to be
delivered to Kim McCallie, Office of Sponsored Programs.

Guidelines
1. Describe the specific nature and purpose of the project, clearly
identifying the target population and explaining how the project seeks to improve teaching
and learning at AASU.
2. Using the 2003 calendar year as a timeline, explain how you intend to
use the alloted release time and summer stipend.
3. Describe any initiatives that you may have already taken to implement
this project or prepare for its implementation.
4. Identify your plans for evaluating the teaching and learning outcomes
of this project.
5. Identify the means (e.g., workshops, faculty lectures, presentation
at the President's Symposium, article in Armstrong Academics, et al.) by which
you intend to communicate the results of this project to other interested faculty at AASU.
